What ADB is doing in the Urban Sector?

Problems in the urban areas are complex requiring interventions that are multi-component or integrated in approach. Integrated projects support investments across many sub-sectors including solid waste management, drainage, urban roads and bridges, slum improvement and environmental sanitation, water supply, and sewerage and wastewater management. Capacity building, introduction of reforms, new financial approaches are also required to sustain development in urban areas.

Cities Alliance has approved the State Programme on Poverty Reduction and Economic Development (SPPRED), Secretariat, Ministry of Economic Development's application for $500,000 to conduct City and Regional Development Strategies in Azerbaijan.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) in cooperation with the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development(BMZ) will be hosting an international conference focusing on sustainable development of Asian cities and city regions in 6 - 7 March 2005 in Manila.

Cities Alliance 2004 Annual Report

This year's report stresses the critical need for policies and strategies to promote the positive impacts of urbanization – 'Instead of debating the contribution of cities to development, more energy needs to be spent on unblocking it'.

Eschborn Dialogue 2005

This year's Eschborn Dialogue focuses on the city theme. Some 400 experts from politics, business, science and development cooperation will come together from 13 to 14 June 2005 to share their experience and knowledge on urban development. Dr. Volker Hauff, Chair of the German Council for Sustainable Development, will open the event with a keynote speech.

Translating the millennium pledges into local action across Asia and the Pacific

Suwon City, Korea, 25 May 2005 - Afghanistan, Indonesia, and economically vibrant China joined 10 other Asia and Pacific countries at a Local Government Development Institute (LOGODI) meeting in Suwon City this week to devise ways of localizing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
